- Wednesday, October 14, 2026: The TSX climbs with oil, Wall Street stalls, and inflation takes the stage
Canadian stocks rose about 0.9% on Tuesday as energy shares tracked oil near US$95, while US stocks barely moved as strong bank profits were offset by another drop in chip stocks. This morning, US inflation for September came in at 3.7% a year, a touch above the 3.6% expected, and the core measure also ran hotter than forecast. - Monday, October 12, 2026: Canada loses 68,000 jobs, and the TSX jumps 1.5%
A bad Canadian jobs report on Friday made a Bank of Canada rate hike this month less likely, and the TSX rallied; Wall Street ended a winning week higher, too. Today the TSX is closed for Thanksgiving, US stocks are open, and the big test this week is US inflation on Wednesday. - Friday, October 9, 2026: Chips slide, oil surges, and the TSX bounces back
On Thursday a sell-off in chip stocks pulled the Nasdaq down 1.3%, while the TSX rose 0.3% on a jump in oil. This morning, oil is easing after President Trump said he won't strike Iran before next month's midterms, bond yields are lower, and US futures point higher ahead of Canada's jobs report and Delta's results. - Thursday, October 8, 2026: Bond yields bite back, and Canada takes the bigger hit
Stocks slipped from records on Wednesday as US bond yields touched their highest level since 2002 and Fed minutes pointed to another rate hike this year; the TSX fell 1.7%, its worst day in a month. Overnight, oil jumped on record tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and a hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, and US futures are lower. - Wednesday, October 7, 2026: A record day for the S&P 500, as bond yields take a breather
The S&P 500 closed at a record on Tuesday as long-term bond yields eased off 24-year highs and a nuclear power deal lit up utility stocks. Futures are slightly lower this morning, yields are back up, and the Fed's meeting notes come out this afternoon. - Tuesday, October 6, 2026: Tech sets a record, but bond yields keep climbing
The Nasdaq closed at a record on Monday, lifted by two big takeover deals and tech strength, even as the US 10-year bond yield rose to its highest close in about 24 years. Futures are higher this morning and oil is falling. - Monday, October 5, 2026: Hiring nearly stalls, and Wall Street cheers
US employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, far fewer than expected. Investors took it as a sign the Federal Reserve may not need to raise rates again soon, and stocks rose. Futures are slightly lower this morning. - Friday, October 2, 2026: Bond yields hit a 24-year high, and stocks shrugged
The US 10-year Treasury yield touched its highest level since 2002, oil rose, and stocks still ended slightly higher. Today, all eyes are on the September jobs report.
